School Bus Yellow
2/26/10
A school bus is a type of bus used for transporting children and teenagers to and from school and school events. The first school bus was horse-drawn, introduced in 1827 by George Shillibeer for a Quaker school at Abney Park in Stoke Newington, London, United Kingdom, and was designed to carry 25 children.
In North America, the school bus is a specific type of government-regulated vehicle distinct from other types of buses. Canada and the United States have specially built and equipped school buses; by law these are required to be painted school bus yellow and equipped with various forms of warning and safety devices specific to them. In Europe and other parts of the world, the buses used for transporting students are more closely related to other types of buses than their North American counterparts.
North America
In the United States and Canada, school buses are primarily used to transport students. This service is almost always provided without charge to families. In the U.S., the term busing also refers to the transport of students to other than their closest local schools to increase racial integration. Modern school buses may be equipped with amenities lacking only a few years ago such as stereo systems, air conditioning and higher-headroom roofs although high-headroom school buses have been an option as early as the mid 1950s.
- General Statistics
School buses provide an estimated 10 billion student trips each year in the U.S. Every school day, 475,000 school buses transport 25 million children to and from schools and school-related activities. School buses are purchased or leased by some school districts, while other school districts engage the service of school bus contractors to perform this function. Approximately 40% of school districts in the United States use contractors to handle student transportation; in Canada, contractors are used almost universally.
Canada
Canadian school buses are very similar to their U.S. counterparts both in terms of overall design and how school systems use them. The largest difference is the adaptation to Canada's bilingual population. In French-speaking Quebec, the signage on the outside of the bus is in French; the front and rear legends read "Ecoliers" (French for "Schoolchildren"), and the stop sign legend may read "Arrêt" (French for "Stop").
Many Canadian-brand school buses are sold in the United States, and there are Canadian-manufactured school buses sold the United States. As of 2010, Canada's only domestic school bus manufacturer is Girardin Minibus. The Corbeil designs made in Canada before the firm's closure in 2008 are now manufactured and sold by Collins Industries in the United States. In Canada, the Blue Bird All American is rebadged as the Blue Bird TX3; in the past, it has also been named the All Canadian and the TC/3000.
The design of student transportation systems in Canada differs slightly than those in the United States; the usage of contractors for transportation operations is much higher among Canadian school districts. School districts rarely provide their own transportation.

Decorating a Nursery in Yellow
2/17/10
Ideas and Inspiration to Create a Cheery Baby's Nursery
Often described as happy and stimulating, yellow in all its variations is a great color for a baby’s room. From hues with just a hint of color to almost shocking sunshine shades, it is conducive to just about any decorating style you may have. If you have a nursery theme in mind, you can probably find a yellow paint to go with it.
It’s easy to get started decorating a nursery in yellow. Just pick a shade at the paint store and put it on all four walls. The great thing about yellow is you won’t mind looking at for a long time, and it will adapt to different décor as your baby grows. Here are three ideas for a yellow nursery.
Yellow and Gray Nursery
This color combination is a recent favorite among design buffs and fits in with a more modern decorating style. If you want something different from standard-issue blue or pink, why not try this combo? A wash of lemony yellow on the wall pops against cool, calming gray accessories. For girls, look for pieces with stylized floral prints. Modern designs like stripes, polka dots, and shapes work if you’re decorating for a boy. You’ll find several bedding lines incorporating this color palette, or look for yellow mix and match items in different patterns.
Yellow and Blue Nursery
Like a clear, sunny day in spring, the combination of yellow and blue is a fresh alternative for your baby’s nursery. Adaptable for a boy or girl, you could pair sunshine yellow walls with a ceiling treatment designed to look like clouds in the sky. Then, continue the sky blue accents in the bedding, window treatments, and other accessories. Brighter turquoise works equally well with a yellow background. Draw attention to the color contrast with turquoise wall stickers—find them at crafts stores or online—in fun designs. You can use them in an under-the-sea theme or simple flower silhouettes for a more girly look.
Yellow Popular as a Neutral Nursery Color for Baby
A personal can have an emotional reaction to a color. When that color is yellow, it evokes cheer, warmth, and hope. The Pantone Color Institute, the world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems, named a vibrant shade of yellow called ‘mimosa’ it’s Color of the Year in 2009. Yellow symbolizes all the good qualities of the sun and is an antidote to any troubled mood, which is why it is a perfect color to decorate your baby’s nursery.
Yellow seems to be gaining in popularity on the decorating front. It appeals to men as well as women, coordinates well with other colors, and comes in a wide array of hues that fit into all types of decors. When thinking about adding a bit of sunshine to your baby’s nursery walls, it’s wise to put some thought into finding the perfect shade of yellow.
A soft tone that offers just a hint of buttery yellow can be a pleasing neutral backdrop that can be used with almost anything. A pale yellow teamed up with pastel blues, aquas, apricots, pinks or pale sage creates a soft and delicate environment, perfect for a nursery, a little girl’s room or a to set the tone in a floral-inspired nursery. Truer tones of yellow combined with blue create a classic combination often seen in toile patterns or crisp stripes. Juxtapose a bolder yellow as an accent with black and white and the result is very contemporary.
Make the organization of the room, must take into account the age of the child, with his passions and interests, and also with the functions which it will perform - learn, play, sleep.

SunFlower Yellow Bathroom
2/9/10
Yellow usually reminds us of sunshine and brings a sense of warmth to a room. It can remind us of being at the beach so I think it works perfectly well for a wet location such as the bathroom. When designing yellow in a bathroom I think it should be your main and possibly your only color. It works beautifully with white toilets, tubs and sinks and I would definetly go with stainless or chrome fixtures and not gold. If you are thinking about using yellow in your bathroom consider how much yellow you want to use. These interiors show the many ways of implementing yellow into your bathroom whether you want to tile all four walls or just add yellow decorative towels. Enjoy!
Yellow captures the joy of sunshine and communicates happiness. It’s perfect for kitchens, dining rooms, and bathrooms, where happy color is energizing and uplifting.
Strong color in the bathroom isn’t considered “spa” but that wasn’t the point of this amazing DIY job in an old French country house. The vintage tub was rehabbed by painting the exterior black and accenting the feet in white, to match the inside. Color for the sunflower yellow walls was mixed by the owner, a photographer, who added thin cordons of black, reminiscent of frames on film, to function like molding on the walls. An oversized photo of a yellow curtain almost looks like a mirror on the tub ledge. As a scheme, sunflower-black-white is more often chosen for kitchens than bathrooms and a big yellow clearly requires big space. Given all that, it’s unforgettable.

Whoa yellow! Either someone's been messing with this photo (which actually they probably have, come to think about it--even the white looks yellow), or this is a bit too much yellow, even for me. It is a very happy kitchen, though, and I like the warm brown they chose as a second color, and the brick wall behind the stove. It's hard to tell, but it looks like it might be a light green in natural light, which would make it a nice focal point and a good color addition.
I love the butter yellow on these walls! The way it's been balanced with the white and the red makes it not too overwhelming, and the rug adds some nice color to the floor.
So, kitchen fans, today's kitchen is from the "Yellow Period"
